It was a state rivalry at Boston Park between Team Midwest Plains out of Waite Park, MN and Team Minnesota out of Baxter, MN.
Team MWP took a quick lead in the first with a couple of singles and stolen bases. Almost immediately, MWP had two runs on the board.
In the bottom of the first, Team MN had their tying run on the bag after their first hit from Max Roby. However, they couldn’t bring the runs in and left two stranded. MN trailed 2-0 after the first.
A scoreless second and third innings left the score at 2-0, but a two-run lead wasn’t enough for MWP when they got to the fourth. Jack Theisen slapped a hit into deep center for an RBI double, putting his team ahead by three.
Roby put up a bit of a battle for MN when he sent a shot flying into center field, only for it to be caught by MWP for the final out of the fourth.
MWP went two up, two down in the top of the fifth before Ben Eiyck sent a shot flying over the left field wall of Boston Park, a replica of the famous “green monster.” Eiyck put his team ahead by four, and that was the only run MWP scored that inning.
Hunter Heidgriken pitched nearly the entire game for MWP, leaving with only one out left in the game. He pitched a total of 65 pitches, and allowed no runs for MN. His reliever, Jon Sufka, pitched the final out to help guarantee his team the win.
The state rivalry ended in a 4-0 win for MWP. Roby was named Player of the Game for MN for having the first hit on his team for this game. Heidgriken was named Player of the Game for MWP for his solid work on the mound.
MN is scheduled to play again 3 p.m. Saturday at Boston Park, while MWP is scheduled to play again 10 a.m. Sunday at Chicago Field.
